Obituary for Joan Paton

Joan Paton
On Thursday, April 27th, 2017, in her 86th year, our beloved, Wife, Mother and Nana passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Markham, ON. For 63 years, she was the adored wife of Don and cherished mother of the late Ross (Carolynne), Alan (Lisa), Neil (Dianne) and Mary-Jane Martins (Dwayne). Treasured Nana to her precious grandchildren: Jennifer Ott (Mike), Alex Paton (Danielle), Megan Martins (Adam), Michael Paton (Jennifer), Doug Paton (Marissa), Steve Paton (Tristan), Daniel Martins, Alex Griffiths, Adam Paton, Jamie Paton and Nathan Griffiths. Amazing and proud Great Grandmother of Hazel Ott and William Paton. Dear sister of Helen Baatz (John).
Joan was a beloved matriarch who was never happier than when she was surrounded by her entire family. She encouraged the family to be close to one another and fostered that by welcoming everyone up to her favourite place in the world – the family cottage in Muskoka. Surrounded by great lake friends, her children and grandchildren, and multiple family dogs, she celebrated more than 50 joy-filled years at Dyson Lake.
Joan was born in Quebec City and raised in Montreal. She met Don in the Laurentians, married and moved to Ontario. She who took great pride in raising her 4 children and making a difference in her community. She joined the Hospital Auxiliary and then fought to develop the 2nd Hospital Foundation in all of Ontario at York Central Hospital (now Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital) where in 1977, she was the inaugural Foundation President. To date, this Foundation has raised more than $111 million dollars for the Hospital. Subsequently, she joined the Board of Directors at the Hospital and continued to work to make it the best community hospital possible. In later years, she and Don enjoyed many happy winters in Naples, Florida where the entire family loved visiting for sunny vacations and much fun in the pool and the outlet malls.
Visitation will occur on Thursday May 4th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Joan’s life will be celebrated in a service on Friday May 5th at 1 p.m. Both will occur at Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, ON L4C 5N1 (www.marshallfuneralhome.com )
If desired, donations in Joan’s memory can be made to Mackenzie Health Foundation foundation@mackenziehealth.ca .
We love you and miss you Mom!
