Obituary for Aidan Tomkins

It is with crushed hearts, irreparably broken, that Dave and I must say goodbye to our second born son, our gift from God, Aidan James. Little brother to Sean, big brother to Gerald, and loved dearly by both. Aidan had a big heart and a bigger smile. Too big a heart at times to his own detriment. A few of his good friends told us this today. Sadly we may find that that played a part in his passing. Aidan embraced life to the fullest. He could not be tamed nor should he have been. He was adventurous from an early age - very much like his proud father. At the age of 4, Aidan learned to ride a bike. Soon after, he was skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding, playing hockey, seadoing and jumping off the 45 foot cliffs at the Elora Gorge, while I stood watching with a lump in my throat. He did all these things early in life but he had a full life ahead of him - a life that was stolen from him and from our family. He wanted to start his own business. He wanted to go to western Canada where his late grandfather first worked. He had yet to meet that special person, possibly marry, possibly have children. So much left to do. I already miss his engulfing hugs. Even if at times I was not pleased with him, he would hug me and say "sorry Mom, sorry". Only a mother can know how great the love is for her child. We loved Aidan to the moon and back. Aidan's gone, and I don't know how we will ever make any sense of that or how we will ever accept that he's not coming home. We are no longer a complete family - we are broken and weighted down with endless waves of tears and grief, always absent of our irreplaceable Aidan. Aidan deserved so much more. Maybe more than this world could give him. I only pray that he is at peace now and held in the loving arms of Jesus until we get there and see him once again. "We thank you for your thoughts and prayers for Aidan."
