Tommasina DeCaria(nee Barbieri) passed away peacefully at Markham Stouffville Hospital on Monday, May 4th, 2020, at the age of 86. Tommasina, affectionately known as Sina, was born in Torre Di Ruggiero, Catanzaro, Italy, on July 18th, 1933. She immigrated to Canada with her brothers in 1956 for the opportunity of a better future. Sina married the love of her life, Tony, in June 1958.Sina is predeceased by her loving husband Tony, her son Frank, and her siblings Nicola, Toto, and Salvatore(Barbara), as well as her sister-in-law Maria, Angelina, and brother-in-laws Stefano and Ciccio(Mimma). Sina will always be cherished by her children Elisabetta (Nick) and Maurizio. She will forever be adored by her grandchildren Nicole, Matthew, Anthony, Alexia, Stephanie and Michael. Sina will be held close in the hearts of her siblings Elisa, Amadeo and Mario and her sister -in- laws Anna and Nancy. Sina will be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbours for her lovingness, generosity, thoughtfulness, and kindness.Sina had a real zest for life, lived life to the fullest, and loved everything beautiful, including nature, fashion, jewellery but most of all, her family, and friends. Sina liked to keep busy enjoying cooking, gardening, sewing, ceramics, and playing golf. However, Sina experienced the greatest joy surrounded by family and friends. As a faithful Roman Catholic, Sina volunteered her time to St. Mary Immaculate Church and the Association of Torre di Ruggiero. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff and physicians on 2E at Markham Stouffville Hospital for their compassionate and empathetic care of our mother. We are forever grateful. And to the staff at Villa Leonardo Gambin. Our mother was a strong and passionate lady. We will remember her smile and laughter, and we will treasure all our fond memories of her. We are touched by the outpouring of love and support. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private ceremony will be held at Marshall Funeral Home on Thursday, May 7th, at 11 am. A private entombment at Elgin Mills Cemetery will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Markham Stouffville Hospital or the Alzheimer's Society of Ontario.

Being the oldest of the nieces, I presume I knew her longest and perhaps best. We shared similar interests mainly fashion & cooking. I knew better than to compete wit her green thumb gardening skills. In fact anytime I visited, I knew the visit would take up considerable time - one hour alone dedicated to checking the gardens and her amazingly beautiful flowers, and yes, she knew the name of each and every one. A walking "botanist" she was indeed, aside from being a book of knowledge on many other interesting topics. I fear (in a good way) I may have inherited her spunk and 'attitude' in fighting for just causes. Aunt Sina was a shining star and her warm smile will be missed terribly! I'm sure we will all agree on choosing to remember her as she was and not as she became, due to the cruelty of Alzheimer's. She will be missed but find comfort in knowing she has now gone home and will be with all the others, who welcome her with wide open arms!

My memories of Sina simply put a smile on my face. Growing up on Garden Ave. with the DeCaria family brings to mind many happy times that we shared and Sina made them all the more special. Sina was a lady who truly appreciated and enjoyed life. My memory of her is also that of a classy lady who very much appreciated "la moda" and her home. Sina was so creative and talented. Whether indoors or outdoors she was full of creativity and just had "that touch". From baking Italian style birthday cakes for her children, creating extravagant menus for her dinner parties and to designing her landscape gardens fit for the front cover of a magazine. And, of course, one cannot forget the beautiful wedding gown Sina designed and sewed for her daughter Elisabetta. Sina did everything with love and passion but most of all she did everything for her family and friends. A lady that will not be forgotten. You did well Sina. Rest in peace.

The void we feel in our hearts is immense. Words alone are not enough to describe our beloved zia Sina. She was always so loving, kind, gentle, honest and had a heart of gold. She was also a woman of true wisdom. She exemplified all these traits in her daily life and interactions with others. I remember all the good sound advice she would give me and her words of encouragement, to stay strong, never give up & remain faithful to our Lord no matter what life throws at you. Her creative talents were unending - an amazing cook, baker (oh how much I loved her zeppole, dinners and baked goods), an extraordinary seamstress, amazing wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend. She was an inspiration to many (myself included) with her gentle and loving spirit, zest for life, and her strength, courage, determination and perseverance and she always spoke her mind - all these qualities I loved and admired about her. With every phone conversation and visit, she would always call you "tesoro" or "amore" and at the end of every call or visit, would always say "un bacione" or "ti voglio bene". Zia, may God embrace you in his loving arms and take you to his Eternal Home, Heaven, to be reunited with all your loved ones who are waiting to welcome you home. Never forgotten, always remembered in our hearts.

Like the song goes,
"Unforgettable, that's what you are,
Unforgettable though near or far,
Never before has someone been more unforgettable in every way".

RIP dear sweet zia. You will be truly missed.

Forever in our hearts,
Fiorella and Ventura

Tommasina was kind, generous, loving and was like a second mother to many. Her smile could light up a room and her laugh was infectious. She filled our lives with happiness and sweet feelings that we will carry in our hearts forever. This is when, more than ever, we appreciate all those fond memories of family Christmas's, vacations, picnic's and to the many social gatherings where food, drinks and laughter was plentiful. Zia, you taught us to never end a conversation with a "ciao" but with "un bacione", so then we bid you not a farewell but "un bacione". Heaven has gained an angel and may you rest in peace.
Adesso preghiamo per lei come lei ha sempre pregato per tutti noi. Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. God bless
